Partners Help with Riparian Buffer Restoration on Gabriels Creek

Ed McNally with the Madison County Rotary Club and Marshall Native Gardens Initiative installs an educational sign along the Gabriel's Creek Greenway below Mars Hill Elementary School. We have been collaborating on restoring the riparian buffer to native plants since 2017. It all began with our first Shade Your Stream workshop in which participants planted livestakes along the banks of Gabriel's Creek where crews had previously been mowing down to the waters edge (first two pics below). Rotary has planted potted trees along this entire stretch of the greenway and most recently volunteers planted a grove of trees next to the picnic pavilion. We have also been eradicating invasive plants such as Johnson grass, multiflora rose, and miscanthus. The birds and the butterflies are loving it! Our sign lists the benefits of riparian buffers and all the partners/funders that have worked to make this happen. See the transformation to today...
