Mountain Valleys Resource Conservation & Development

NC Tobacco Trust Fund Commission Renewable Energy Grant Awarded

Mountain Valleys RC&D is undertaking a project to promote renewable energy production on farms. This grant provides 40% cost-share funds to western North Carolina farmers implementing renewable energy on their farms.

Project Goals :
• Install renewable energy systems on farms in a multi-regional rural area of western NC, covering 22 counties.
• Promote economic development and preserve farms.
• Increase farm income by selling generated power to the electric grid.
• Target farms that have a history of growing Burley Tobacco.
• To support local electricians and installers in the growing field of renewable energy.
• Monitor systems and determine which renewable energy solutions are most efficient. This will help to determine profit based on the investment cost and evaluate the potential that this technology holds for farmers.
• Benefit North Carolina and its electric utilities by providing clean and renewable energy to the electrical grid.
• Assist interested landowners with project feasibility, permitting, interconnection agreements and funding opportunities.
• Continue progress towards natural resource conservation and CO² reduction.
• Provide information to people interested in renewable energy through meetings, workshops and private consulting.

Conservation Innovation Grant Awarded

Mountain Valleys RC&D has received a grant from the Natural Resource Conservation Service to demonstrate and evaluate the feasibility of solar water heating systems on dairy farms in order to encourage its adoption in North Carolina. Dairy farms require large amounts of hot water during the pasteurization and equipment cleaning process. The grant will provide a 50% cost-share for installed systems.

Benefits of this renewable energy technology include improving air quality by reducing the amount of energy conventionally used to heat hot water with gas or electric hot water heaters; solar water heating reduces Carbon Dioxide emissions by offsetting the amount of fossil fuels burned with renewable energy, helping to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
